Never one to do anything by halves it seems, Alana Springsteen had quite the Friday last week. Not only did she release two brand new songs to kick off her new era of music - more on those shortly - she also made her return to perform in that legendary circle at the Grand Ole Opry, two years to the day after making her official debut … she also happened to be turning 24, so yeah, quite the Friday.

It’s been a whirlwind of touring all over the world for Alana since she released the third and final EP that comprised her outstanding, eighteen track, debut album ‘Twenty Something’ last summer. She’s played festivals and shows not just in her native US, including a hometown show in Virgina Beach (what up Pungo, VA) but also in Australia, Canada and the UK where she headlined the Rainbow stage on the 4th of July Country music takeover day at BST Hyde Park.

Cowboy’ features the same kind of authentic, all-too relatable and catchy as hell lyrics that Springsteen has become known for to tell the tale of being disappointed by the promise of a partner who initially seemed to be something different but eventually turned out to be “just another cowboy.”

At these shows, and on her socials, Alana has been playing new songs and teasing that new music was coming soon. Finally, ‘soon’ is now and we have the first two songs to kick of her sophomore era: ‘Cowboy’ and ‘Hold My Beer’ are now out in the wild and streaming wherever you get your music.

Cowboy’ feels like a big song - a slick drum beat overlays a seductive underlying guitar riff, providing the perfect melody to showcase Alana’s flawless vocal as she weaves together the age-old tale of hope turned into heartbreak, though it’s in the final moments of the song - where the instrumentation is stripped way back - that gives Alana’s voice the opportunity to really soar and pack that emotional gut-punch that’s as much a signature of her style as the Jordan’s she wears on stage.

Whereas ‘Cowboy’ showcases a more raw, vulnerable side, ‘Hold My Beer’ is an up-tempo, sit up and take notice banger of a vibe that turns that vulnerability entirely on its head as Alana addresses anyone who’s been foolish enough to underestimate her; asking her doubters to metaphorically hold her beer while she stands up and shows them just how wrong they’ve gotten her. The swagger and confidence radiating from every note of this song showcases how far she’s come even in just the last two years since she made her Opry debut, and if this is where she’s at launching her second album, it begs the question: where will she be at by album five? Ten? Hell, her lucky number’s eighteen, so why not album eighteen? Because this is clearly an artist that’s on the precipice of taking the country music genre by storm in a major way.

“But here we go again, he’s ridin’ on the wind like there was nobody hurt. He roped me in like no one could, and in the end he really broke me good.” Relatable, right? Alana has such a talent for writing the kind of songs that immediately resonate with people; the kind of lyrics our own hearts might write if only we had that same gift for distilling such complex emotions into three- or four-minute bangers.

There’s a lot of signature touches in ‘Cowboy / Hold My Beer’ that are still so quintessentially Alana: the raw, honesty of the songwriting, her incredible voice at the forefront, but sonically it also does feel different - bigger, bolder, ballsier. What is very clear with both of these songs is that she isn’t looking to repeat the sounds of ‘Twenty Something’ (though I’m sure no one amongst her fan base would complain if she did) but she’s definitely showcasing new sides to her music and her personality as an artist, which only builds the excitement and anticipation for her upcoming album.

Making the release of these new songs even more special than the fact that she released them on her twenty-fourth birthday, is that she marked their official release day by making her return to the Grand Ole Opry to perform them. This was her third time playing country music’s most famous stage, two years to the day after making her debut ahead of her ‘Messing It Up’ EP, which would later become the first third of ‘Twenty Something.’ Not only that, but while she was backstage, her team gifted her with the official framed gold record (her first, no doubt of many) for ‘Goodbye Looks Good on You,’ which she co-wrote and duetted with Mitchell Tenpenny (Dallas Wilson and Lauren LaRue share co-write credits alongside them).

Following the performance, Alana took to Insta to share her reflective mood and acknowledge herself how far she’s come in the last two years: “A piece of me that I didn’t think would ever heal healed on that stage. It’s been two years since my debut and a very different girl showed up this time. A much braver one. I’ve been thinking about the ten-year-old girl in some of these photos a lot lately and I’m still doing everything I can to make her proud.”

From our perspective, that mission has already been accomplished.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Alana.
