North Carolina-born, UK-based country artist, Nathan Leazer delivers a raw and heartfelt message with his latest single, Nothing to Lose. Released to coincide with the conclusion of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, this poignant track is a testament to Leazer’s ability to blend vulnerability with hope, creating a song that will resonate with anyone who’s faced tough times.

The song begins with a stripped-back arrangement, allowing Nathan’s rich, emotive voice to take centre stage. The opening line, “I’ve been kicked, I’ve been bruised, I’ve been knocked down a time or two. I’m a man with nothing to lose,” sets the tone for a deeply introspective journey. It’s a bold start, painting the picture of a man who’s lost everything - not just material things, but his sense of purpose, and his faith, leaving him questioning his entire situation in life.

The minimal instrumentation creates a simplicity that mirrors the emotional vulnerability of the lyrics. Yet, as sombre as the verses are, the chorus shifts gears, introducing a sliver of optimism because the notion of hitting rock bottom implies that the only direction left to go is back up. Leazer sings with a quiet conviction, offering the reminder that even when you’ve lost it all, it leaves you with the chance to rebuild.

While Nothing to Lose marks Leazer’s 11th single, it happens to be the first song he ever wrote - one he’s held onto for six years. Speaking to Nathan ahead of the song’s release, he explained that the song initially started from a joke between him and his co-writer, Jeremy Vess, who is more of an indie artist, who stated that he thought “every country song has something about he lost his dog, he lost his house, he lost his job, he lost this or that, and it was kind of a funny thing that we said but I was like, you know, actually that’s a great idea – so we wrote it and within thirty minutes we had it done.”

Despite being born from a moment of levity, Nathan shared that the song has taken on more significance for him now than it did when he first wrote it in 2018: “This song actually resonates more with me now as a man, because of what I’ve been through since we wrote it. Even though I’m only 26 now, I look back and I’m not the same man and I was writing about a man who had nothing to lose, when actually I didn’t even know what that felt like, and now I do, so it feels like the perfect time for me ‘cause it’s a statement to say: I’ve been there, I know what it feels like and you’re not alone.”

Leazer’s decision to release the song at the end of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month adds another layer of significance. On his social media platforms, he has long been vocal about the importance of mental health, particularly amongst men, and Nothing to Lose is a musical extension of that advocacy. In his own words, releasing this song is his way of saying, “I see you,” to those who have struggled, or are currently struggling. It’s a sentiment that shines through, making the track feel like a personal conversation between Leazer and the listener.

Musically, Nothing to Lose is understated but impactful. The production never overshadows the message, instead allowing the lyrics and Leazer’s raw vocal delivery to take the lead. In a genre known for storytelling, Nathan Leazer proves once again that he’s a voice worth listening to.
